Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Kardinal’

Teller series. Sometimes referred to as H. m. ‘Teller Kardinal’. Not to be confused with H. m. ‘Cardinal Red’.

Bred by Federal Research Inst for Hort., Wädenswil, Switzerland in 1987.

Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Kardinal’ is a strong growing shrub. At its best when grown as a ‘red’.

Inflorescence: A rich red-coloured lacecap, 170mm across. Fertile flowers are purplish pink surrounded by dark red ray florets.

Colour in neutral soil:    Deep rich pink.
Colour in acidic soil with Al present:    Purple.

Ray florets: 4 or 5 sepals, entire, rounded, overlapping,
60mm diam. Arranged in a double ring.

Zones: 6 to 9
Size: Medium (to 1.5m).
