Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Nikko Blue’
Originated in Japan. Introduced to the West before 1970.
Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Nikko Blue’ is very floriferous with beautiful pale blue mopheads, but needs afternoon shade to prevent scorching of flowerheads.
Inflorescence: Very numerous, tight, bright pale blue mopheads, 150mm diam.
Colour in neutral soil: Pale pink, but not recommended
Colour in acidic soil with Al present: Pale blue
Ray florets: 4 sepals, entire, overlapping, 40mm diam.
Zones: 6 to 9
Size: Medium (to 1.5m).
Leaves: Simple, opposite and deciduous. Broadly ovate to broadly elliptic. Margin: serrate. Apex: apiculate. Base: attenuate. Venation pattern: pinnate. Texture of adaxial and abaxial surfaces: smooth, glabrous, moderately glossy. 170mm l x 110mm w.
