Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Setsuka-yae’

Introduced from Japan by Domoto-san of Domoto Nursery, Northern California, in 1960.
Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Setsuka-yae’ is a moderately growing shrub with irregular corymbs. The colour of the flowerheads, if grown in acidic soil, is very attractive indeed.
Inflorescence: Lacecap, 210mm diam. The brilliant blue flowers are quite dramatic against a darker background.
Colour in neutral soil: Pink
Colour in acidic soil with Al present: Brilliant blue
Ray florets: Each with a blue eye, 4 sepals, serrated, overlapping, 70mm diam.
Zones: 6 to 9
Size: Medium (to 1.5m).
Leaves: Simple, opposite and deciduous. Broadly ovate to broadly elliptic. Margin: serrate. Apex: apiculate. Base: attenuate. Venation pattern: pinnate. Texture of adaxial and abaxial surfaces: smooth, glabrous, moderately glossy. 190mm l x 110mm w.
